About Momma Hazel

The wisdom is real. So is the love.

Momma Hazel on her porch

Momma Hazel is the pen name of an author who has spent more than thirty years in the healing arts.

She grew up on the kind of love that sits you down, feeds you, and tells you the truth.

When she was five years old and living in Kentucky, her grandmother asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up.

Even then, she knew her purpose.

She wanted to help everyone see that heaven is right here, and to enjoy it together.

That little girl's answer became her life's mission, and every Momma Hazel book carries a piece of it.

She began her healing path in nursing school, until her heart led her to Chinese medicine.

The author behind Momma Hazel holds a master's degree in Oriental medicine from a rigorous program with a sister school in Hong Kong.

Her training in Chinese medicine included:

  • Yin-Yang theory
  • Five Element theory
  • Zang Fu organ theory
  • The Five Flavors and the Four Natures of food
  • Qi, Blood and Body Fluids
  • The Three Treasures: Jing, Qi and Shen
  • The Five Spirits
  • Meridian and channel theory
  • The Chinese organ clock
  • The causes of disease: the six climates and the seven emotions
  • Eight Principles diagnosis
  • Six Stages theory
  • Four Levels theory
  • San Jiao theory
  • Tongue and pulse diagnosis
  • Chinese herbal medicine and formulas
  • The Chinese medicated diet
  • Acupuncture and point theory
  • Moxibustion, cupping and gua sha
  • The Chinese classics, including the Yellow Emperor's Classic
  • Seasonal living
  • Western pharmacology

She also trained in the touch therapies, including tui na and Su Jok.

She has been a massage therapist since 1996.

She is a craniosacral therapist, Reiki master and an Aura-Soma color practitioner, and she studied Jin Shin Jyutsu with a longtime mentor.

Movement has been another great teacher.

Through qigong, tai chi and a lifelong love of dance, she has explored how energy moves and flows, in the body and between people.

She also studied at art school, and her love of color and beauty shows up in every book she makes.

But her deepest knowing has come from a lifetime of seeking: meditation, self-exploration, long talks with friends, trying new things, and looking beyond what ordinary reality offers.

After years of caring for people one at a time in private practice, she chose to reach many more as an author and educator.

Through her books, she shares what the old healers always knew: food, family, love and healing all speak the same language.

The Momma Hazel stories are fiction, inspired by the Kentucky kitchens and the real people the author loved.

The wisdom in them is real. So is the love.
